"Art Trunk" @ CWA

THRIVE at CWA –Cayce Learning Center took full advantage of “Art Trunk”, sponsored by The Frist Center for the Visual Arts. Art Trunk is a mobile art program that looks to stimulate and increase art and artist awareness in partnering community programs. Students begin the curriculum with a pre-test designed to survey their Greek art knowledge.
After an instructional overview by teachers, the kids used clay medium and plastic scalpels to create original artistic pieces inspired by this years “Hero’s” theme. Whenever “Art Trunk” comes around for artistic enlightenment, THRIVE will be waiting with young minds seeking illumination.

Martha O'Bryan Center Presents: "Family Reading Night"

For the second time this program year, THRIVE families were treated to “Family Reading Night”. Misty Moody, Director of Youth Education, Martha O’Bryan Center, took families to a magical land of literary fun as everyone entered MOB’s transformed gymnasium. Queens, Knights, and scattered musical acts showcased this semester’s theme. Participants made family crest, enjoyed a variety of games, and were privy to storytelling by supportive volunteers. Eating and camaraderie topped off an enlightening evening and children grabbed arms full of complimentary storybooks as they said their goodbyes. Reading was definitely Fun as April 6, 2010 brought a night of family advocacy to the THRIVE After school Program.

The Center welcomed the Nashville Prayer Group as they sponsored the CWA Valentine’s Day Breakfast. Adults and children made greeting cards and enjoyed a delightful spread from Panera Bread. Volunteerism was cupids’ arrow on this lovely day of hearts.

Holiday spirit filled the air as the Communication Workers of America (CWA) Local 3808 Union played host to the Center’s annual “Breakfast with Santa”. About 100 Plaza residents gathered in fellowship and fun to take pictures and whisper wishes in Santa’s ear. Families engaged in seasonal arts and crafts while they waited, and each child personally received a take home goody bag from the big guy. The CWA Local 3808 Union continues to show its support for the CWA-Cayce Learning Center and the families it serves.

THRIVE GOES GREEN!

The middle school students of the THRIVE after school program helped the environment and enriched their local community through one of their seasonal community service projects. The students maintain complete creative control over their projects and collective decided on a beautification venture for their very own, CWA Plaza Apartments. With the help of Ms. Carol Norton, Chair of Rediscover East; Ms. Vicki Crick, On-Site Complex Manger of CWA Plaza Apartments; and a band of gracious volunteers, 13 students planted ten trees along the apartment grounds. They incorporated teamwork and hard work as they planted, mulched, and watered the seedlings. Mr. Thomas Solensky provided guidance and the center’s Board showed its support as Mr. Ed. Phillips, lent a helping hand. CWA complex staff helped with preparation and even a few high schoolers donated their time. Wednesday November 25 was a great day as THRIVE students showcased their community and environmental pride!

Students Take A Stand Against Violence

THRIVE students partnered with the Oasis Center and the Youth Opportunity Center to help stop youth violence in Nashville. The citywide "Keeping Our Youth" March was hosted by Youth United and was held on November 14. Middle and high school students made signs and walked from the Juvenile Justice Center to the Metro Courthouse; advocating along the way. Following the march, students heard speeches from community leaders, payed homage to lives lost, and learned alternatives to youth violence. It was a memorable day for the city as THRIVE youth did their part to better their community.

Elementary students participated in their first community service project this week. Students volunteered with the Martha O'Bryan "Meals on Wheels" Program. The program delivers hot lunches to senior citizens that might not otherwise receive a nutritious meal. Students created wonderful place mats and delivered them ,along with lunch plates, to seniors living in East Nashville's Edgehill Manor. They took pictuers with each participants and had a Blast!

After and exciting summer, it's already time for students to report back to school. The first day (half day) of school will be on Friday August 14 and the THRIVE after school program will begin on Monday August 17.

Changes this year

- THRIVE @ CWA is only accepting 55 students this year. High school students will sign up at CWA-Cayce Learning Center but will be bused and housed at the Martha O'Bryan Center. Stop by to register your child/children as soon as possible, as vacancies are limited.

- In addition to two full-time AmeriCorps positions, the center will be adding two new part-time AmeriCorps positions. As in years past, AmeriCorps memebrs will be assisting with THRIVE.

-THRIVE will also be hiring Transition Coaches to work directly with middle and high school students. Coaches will help students reach their individual goals and assist them in transitioning to high school and/or college.

The THRIVE After-School Enrichment Program continues to provide a safe and exciting learning environment for students in the Stratford cluster; offering services designed to develop citizenship awareness, strong character, and educational strenghts that lead to marketable skills and higher education.

THRIVE summer activities ended at Percy Priest Lake with a boat ride, picnic, and an opportunity for students to showcase their talents and group pride. From 2nd grade to high school, each grade level performed skits, dances, and song. Swimming , games, and good food topped off a great summer with great children. July 23 might have been the end of summer activities but fall programming is just around the corner.

New Center Director

Emmanuel Ehiemua is a native of Nashville, Tennessee and was one of three children born to Nigerian American parents. He attended John Overton High School before obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fisk University.

Emmanuel began his career in community support as a HIV/AIDS counselor and top presenter for Project Community Outreach for Prevention and Education (C.O.P.E.) at Meharry Medical College’s Elam Mental Health Center. After the birth of his first child, Emmanuel directed his energy towards helping children and building self advocacy for low income families. He joined the Metropolitan Action Commission Head Start Program and was quickly promoted to the position of Parent Involvement Coordinator while also spearheading the local Head Start Fatherhood Initiative.

An advocate for the underprivileged community, Emmanuel has served on the TENNderCare Advisory Board and the Tennessee Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (TNHCC), and is a current member of Alignment Nashville's Refugee and Immigrant Support Services Committee (RISSC), United Way's Ryan White Community AIDS Partnership Committee(RWCAP), Nashville Safety Net Assessment's Community Advisory Committee (CAC); and Health Committee Chair of the Nashville Branch NAACP.

Emmanuel joined the MOB THRIVE team in June of 2009 as the Director of CWA/Cayce Learning Center and is now dedicated to the mission of the Center and Martha O’Bryan Center.

A Fond Farewell from Becky

As many of you know, this is my last week as the Director of the center. It has been my honor to spend almost 9 years here. I've met some wonderful people and will cherish those memories for the rest of my life. When I came here in February 2000, I had no idea what I was in for, and wow, what a ride! I could have never guessed the kind of adventures I've gotten to experience.

Please continue to support the center! Hopefully after the new director begins, posts will become frequent again and you'll be able to keep up with activities!

There are no prospects yet to fill my position, but stay tuned!

AmeriCorps member positions are now opening at Martha O’Bryan Center. Our youth development program, THRIVE, is looking for people over the age of 18 who want to help young people living in poverty in east Nashville to, well, THRIVE! Our AmeriCorps program will help children and youth ages 5 – 18 change their futures by placing members in local schools to mentor and assist the youth of the THRIVE program to succeed in school. AmeriCorps members will also participate in our after school tutorials, generate excitement about learning, and work to encourage parent participation, as well as participating in local community projects.

Volunteer Needs This Fall

We are back in the swing of things with school starting back this week! We have enrolled our maximum of 62 students for the fall and already have 14 students on a waiting list! It's been a busy week! With all of those students comes the need for volunteers to help us provide our students with the individual attention they need! Our volunteers help with homework and enrichment activities planned by our staff. The following are our needs as we see them now...

On Mondays, we need 1-2 volunteers from 4:00-6:00pm to work with our elementary students and 3 volunteers from 3:00-5:00pm to work with our middle and high school students.

On Tuesdays, we need up to 4 volunteers from 4:00-5:00pm to work in one of our elementary classrooms. We also need 2 volunteers from 3:00-4:30pm and again from 4:30-6:00pm to work with our middle and high school students.

On Wednesdays, we need 1-2 volunteers from 4:00-6:00pm to work with our elementary students and 3 volunteers from 3:00-5:00 to work with our middle and high school students.

On Thursdays, we need up to 4 volunteers from 4:00-5:00pm to work in one of our elementary classrooms. We also need 2 volunteers from 3:00-4:30pm and again from 4:30-6:00pm to work with our middle and high school students.

Time to go back to school!

It's hard to believe, but our students go back to school on Monday! This year we will begin our afterschool program, now called THRIVE, on Tuesday, August 12th!

Big changes this year include:

The addition of three full time AmeriCorps members! One member will be our Middle School Coordinator, one our High School Coordinator, and one our Parent Coordinator. They will spend their mornings in the schools and the community and their afternoons here at the center during THRIVE time! Click on the link to learn more about what AmeriCorps does.
The addition of a Literacy Coordinator! We will have a Literacy Coordinator who will oversee all of our reading groups this year. All 60 of our students will receive reading tutoring this school year! Our LC will be responsible for overseeing our tutors, testing students, and making lessons.
As you've seen already, the name of our afterschool program is now THRIVE! This name encompasses the youth program at our location and the youth program at the Martha O'Bryan Center. One program, two locations.

So as we hire these individuals, we'll make sure to introduce them to you on our blog! Next week we'll have some volunteer information posted!

Our Last Week of Camp!

Seven continents in seven weeks! Needless to say, we're a little jet-lagged! This week we were in Asia. With the Olympics coming up in just a few weeks we wanted our students to be more familiar with the continent on which they are taking place.

While "in" Asia, we learned to use chopsticks...

We also made dragon kites and tried to fly them outside...

The last day of camp (yesterday) the great people at VF Imagewear sponsored an Olympic Day at Shelby Park. They had games and a yummy lunch planned for everyone. And the weather was perfect... probably the prettiest (and least humid!!!) field trip day we've had all summer!

The center is closed next week while we unpack our bags and relax from all of our travels! Leave us a comment and let us know where you went this summer!!

Antarctica & Ice Cream

This week we are in Antarctica! And to celebrate that continent, we made the yummiest, coldest thing we could think of... ICE CREAM!

Here's the recipe if you want to try it at home...

Ingredients:

Measuring cups & spoons
2 oz. milk, cream, or half & half
Vanilla extract or chocolate syrup
1 tsp. sugar
Ice
Salt
Sandwich size freezer bag and large size freezer bag
Newspaper or towel to help "churning"

In the smaller bag, add the milk (or cream or half & half) and a dash of vanilla (or 1/2 teaspoon of chocolate syrup). Seal the bag and "squish" and shake it to mix things up.

Now fill the larger plastic bag half full of ice and add a generous portion of salt.

Make sure your small bag is completely sealed and place it in the larger bag filled with ice and salt. Seal the larger bag.

Wrap your large bag with newspaper or towels. Shake and "churn"! Check every few minutes to see if ice cream has frozen.

When its frozen take it out of the bag and EAT!

Summer Fun Continues!

Sorry for not posting last week!

Our summer fun continues. Last week we were in North America and this week in Australia! So far this week the students played Kangaroo games, had a day at the swimming pool, and made boomerangs out of paint stirs.

In addition to our cultural exploration this summer, we are using Junior Achievement curriculum once a week to teach our students about money and entrepreneurship. Yesterday our middle school students had to develop a commercial for a product they were assigned. The following is a video of Waladi and Deone selling cupcake holders for lunch boxes!

South America Week!

This was the first week of our summer program and we learned about South America! Check out some of our fun!

We learned about the Andes mountains and volcanoes. Here Khadija's volcano erupts all over the table!

We had a crazy Carnival costume contest while learning about the Brazilian celebration! Mohamed & Fatuma were our winners!

We also learned Latin dance from a ballroom instructor, watched a video about the rain forest, made Quetzel (rain forest birds), and made Inca masks out of aluminum foil!

We're headed back to North America next week!

Computer Class Graduation!

Our first adult computer class of the year graduated last Friday afternoon! They spent eight weeks learning computer basics, Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel, Internet and email! We are very proud of those who stuck with it those eight weeks!

Our last day with our students in Homework Club was last Wednesday. To celebrate the end of a school year, each of our students were traced on a large piece of paper (from the waste up), colored the figure to look like them, and then wrote what they learned this year on their picture.

Ilham Graduated High School!

One of our very own has graduated high school! Ilham Eli graduated as Salutatorian of East Literature Magnet School. We are so proud of her accomplishments. Ilham has been in our afterschool program since the fifth grade and we are thrilled to have been part of her journey. It has been our pleasure watching her grow into a very smart and beautiful young lady. Ilham has enrolled with Belmont University for the fall semester and found enough grant money and scholarships to pay for the entire year without having to take out a loan!

At her graduation ceremony, Ilham gave a speech and did such a wonderful job that we wanted to share it with you. HOWEVER, I'm having trouble uploading the video. I'll keep working on it, so check back!

Summer Is Coming

This summer we will again host a summer program for our community called Passport to Anywhere! Running June 9 through July 24, students will learn about a different continent each of the seven weeks.

Week One: South America
Week Two: North America
Week Three: Australia
Week Four: Antarctica
Week Five: Europe
Week Six: Africa
Week Seven: Asia

Students will get to experience the culture on those continents, learn languages, sample foods, and practice geography. They will also go on five field trips, including a trip to the Chattanooga Aquarium.

The program is for rising 1st through 9th graders and will be Monday through Thursday each week from 2:00-5:00pm. The cost for the whole summer... just $25 per student. Our Events Last Week!

As we said in our last blog, the Neighborhood Networks RTAW was here in Nashville last week! On Friday we were very proud to show off our center to about 40 of the workshop participants and Neighborhood Networks staff! They seemed excited to see our center and asked wonderful questions.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of MadLibs, we did a Neighborhood Networks MadLib as a group with everyone contributing words. Here's how it turned out!

"This week at the Nashville RTAW we met so many wonderful people and learned so many PRODUCTIVE things. The accommodations at the SPOKANE were terrific. During the workshops our DOGS were well prepared to TALK the topic that was covered. One of my favorite workshops was about HOUSE. Networking was also important at this SPOON. I met someone named BURMAN who lives in COLUMBUS ZOO and is the director of a DOG. He told me all about SKIING. I think he talked for SIX minutes!

In the evenings, we WALKED the ENERGETIC city of Nashville! It was interesting to see how people EAT in this city! I even decided to take the MONKEY downtown and CREATE a song about this experience.

ACTUALLY, though, we realized our RTAW was all coming to an end. When I go to VAIL, CO I plan to tell my SWEET coworkers about what I VOTED while I was here!"

Neighborhood Networks Conference

As we've explained in earlier posts, we are a part of a national initiative called Neighborhood Networks. Neighborhood Networks, through the US Department of Housing & Urban Development, began this initiative in 1995 to provide technology access and other resources in HUD-insured or HUD-assisted properties.

Next week Neighborhood Networks is hosting one of its two Regional Technical Assistance Workshops (RTAWs) here in Nashville! We are very excited to host this year and are especially excited that they are bringing 50 RTAW participants to our center for a tour on Friday. We were the first in the country to become a MODEL center (the highest level) in Neighborhood Networks classification system and will be offering participants a chance to see what we do in action.

All of that said, next Friday will be a busy day and we will likely not have a post. But look for a new one early the next week with pictures from the event!

Our middle and high school students are working on filling in a 7' x 5.5' map of the world! The map, printed on 64 sheets of paper and hung on our wall is just an outline of continents... the youth are doing the rest!

Ms. Kenithia is helping the girls test liquids (soda, lemon juice, club soda) to see what is an acid and what is a base.

Spring Break Art Fun!

This week was spring break! As we have for many years, we partnered with the Frist Center for the Visual Arts to provide our students an art experience while they were out of school. The Frist Center has an Art Trunk program that sends us three fun art projects that correlate to their current art exhibit at the museum. So this week we learned about Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, and Salvador Dali.

Students used oil pastels to create their own Impressionist art on Monday.

Tuesday they made a collage to resemble a Picasso Cubist work.

And Wednesday, students used watercolor and collage to create a surrealist picture.

Adult Computer Classes Coming Soon!

Beginning March 28th, the Learning Center will be hosting computer classes for adults each Friday at 1:00pm for 10-12 weeks. Taught by two of our favorite volunteers, Jim & Rebecca, students will start at the beginning learning parts of the computer and move into word processing and, maybe even Excel. Our hope is to provide our students with the skills they need to get the job that will move them into the life they've wanted to lead.

Space is still available for 3 or 4 more students, so if you know someone who is interested, please have them contact us at the center before the 28th!

This week we had visitors from the University of Mary Washington's BCM! They came on the perfect week since our Vanderbilt students were on spring break and we were very short on tutors! They helped us with homework, in the computer lab, and with our enrichment activities!

Why Should You Want to Read?

"What suggestions would you make to other students that do not like to read in order to encourage them to be active readers?"

I am also a student at Argosy University, studying to get my Master's Degree in Professional Counseling. I still lead worship at my church, Gateway of Hope Christian Center in Lebanon, TN. Super Tuesday!

This week our elementary students participated in their own Super Tuesday election!

This year's candidates were Arthur and Junie B. Jones, two of our favorite children's book characters. Students read Arthur and Junie books to find out what characteristics they had that would make them the better president. They then cast their ballot in the voting booth.

When asked what characteristics make a great president, students said bravery, honesty, and someone who is responsible.

A Farewell To Mr. Todd

I volunteered at CWA-Cayce on and off between 2003 - 2007 working with the high school kids in the after school program. Now I am teaching at a public high school in Madrid, Spain on a Fulbright Scholarship. I've attached a picture of me while visiting Toledo, a medieval city just Southwest of Madrid.

Puppet Show!

Here are the volunteer opportunities we have available beginning January 8th!

Reading Tutor

Tuesdays from 4:30-5:30pm

We are looking for people to tutor a small group of elementary or middle school students (no more than 5 children) with reading one day per week. Training, books and lesson plans are provided.

Homework Helper

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday

3:15-4:30pm.

4:30-6:00pm,

or 3:15-6:00pm

Assist with homework and enrichment activities in one of our classrooms. You can choose the grade level you would like to work with.

Computer Teachers

Based on volunteer availability

One or two individuals are needed to teach basic computer skills to adults one to two times per week. Curriculum provided.

If you've never volunteered before, we have set up an orientation/training for Monday, January 7th here at the center! Please let us know if you are able to attend and we can send you directions to get here! If you can't make this date and time, still let us know you are interested as we will be setting up other orientations this month.

Welcome to our first installment of "Where Are They Now"! We have met a lot of spectacular people in the last twelve years and want to share with you where they've gone since leaving the center. We'll spotlight former staff, favorite volunteers, and hopefully some of our students!

This week we catch up with Malorie who was the Education Coordinator from March of 2003-May of 2004! Here is what she is up to!

From Malorie:

I am currently living in Dallas, Texas with my husband Victor and son Landen who just turned 1 year old on December 1. I am teaching middle school math for Dallas Independent School District. This is my first year with the district and I love it. My school is in a highly populated hispanic neighborhood, so while I am teaching math to my students they are teaching me Spanish!!! Outside of family I am training to run in the Dallas Big D Marathon in April of 2008.

Our Thankgiving Dinner

We decided to post early this week so everyone could see pictures of our Thanksgiving dinner last Tuesday. A very generous person donated money so that we could provide our children with a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Each child was treated to turkey, potatoes, gravy, corn, cranberry sauce, and biscuits! They were also able to take a bag of food home so that their families could also enjoy a traditional American meal. It was nice to sit down as a "family" and break bread together!

After dinner, the children viewed their THANKSgiving video. They were very excited to see what they were thankful for on the big screen!

Here is our much-anticipated THANKSgiving video! Our students, staff, and volunteers were asked to write down what they were thankful for in less than four words, although some cheated a little. We photographed those words and created this video.

What you do as a volunteer: Help students with homework

How I found out about the center: From my older brother and sister, who volunteered at CWA with Vanderbuddies

My favorite part about being a volunteer is… getting to spend time with the students. They're so much fun and I have a great time getting to know them while helping them with their homework.

My least favorite part about being a volunteer is… Being a volunteer is great, but I hate having to cancel or miss a week of volunteering at CWA if I have tests or something else come up.

My favorite memory is… hmm I have too many! But I guess one of my favorites is when I was in the computer lab with some of the middle school students and we spent the entire time on disney.com listening to High School Musical songs!

I would encourage someone else to take the leap and volunteer because… volunteering not only helps the student and the volunteer learn, but it's also really fun. Volunteering at CWA is especially fun because the students are awesome. They're really funny and smart and they make volunteering every week something I really look forward to!

Book Club

This semester, several of our elementary students are participating in a "Book Club". Each week, students read a chapter of a book that they picked out as a group and report back on their reading.

Here are some of their observations about the book...
My favorite part was "when Jack and Annie squinted at the pyramid wall." -- Shamsi, 3rd grade
What I didn't like about this chapter was "when Annie gives Jack a little push." -- Rahama, 3rd grade
In the next chapter I think "they will find the mummies." -- Shamsa, 3rd grade

The children involved in Book Club have become very independent and enjoy facilitating on their own. They remain focused and very engaged each Tuesday afternoon.

A History Lesson

This week we’d like to give you some history about the center. Many of you, our friends, are new to the center and we would love for you to know a little more about where we came from.

In 1996, representatives of the CWA Plaza Apartments, the Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency (MDHA), the Nashville office of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Martha O’Bryan Center formed what is now known as the CWA-Cayce Learning Center. The Learning Center is part of a national collaboration called Neighborhood Networks. Neighborhood Networks is an initiative of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) that was originally established to provide technology in areas where technology was historically limited (i.e. HUD-assisted, and insured properties). To date there are more than 1,200 centers across the country, however, no two centers are alike. Neighborhood Network centers are about getting out into the community, speaking with residents, and providing programs that meet their stated needs. Never do we assume to know what our community needs. Our residents are the experts in this neighborhood.

In 2005, Neighborhood Networks unveiled a program to classify it's centers. While no two Neighborhood Networks centers are alike, more than 10 years of successfully delivering technology access and other resources to America’s communities have revealed a number of factors that lead to center sustainability and success. The standards used for Designated, Certified and Model status are based on review and analysis of those factors. By following the classification guidelines, centers will be more likely to experience success in both aiding residents and increasing market value of their property. Shortly after the classification process began, our learning center became the first in the nation to earn Model Status, the highest level of achievement.

Volunteer Spotlight: Heather

What you do as a volunteer: I started out with after-school Homework Club, helping the kids with their homework, and doing educational/enrichment activities with them when homework was finished. On Fridays during last school year, we had Karate Class and I worked with the kids, teaching them some fundamental skills such as kicks and punches; as well as some simple self-defense techniques. This school year, I am doing the Reading Tutor Program, helping the kids to improve their skills and hopefully learn to enjoy reading!

How I found out about the center: I saw an ad in the classifieds of the Rage newspaper.

My favorite part about being a volunteer is… being a part of these kids' lives on a regular basis. I have learned so much about their culture just from being around them once a week. They're such amazing children, very bright and full of personality! They really make me laugh -- mostly at myself but that's OK.

My least favorite part about being a volunteer is… not having as much time to spend with the kids as I would like.

My favorite memory is… Gosh, that's a hard one! The first thing that comes to mind is our "Dance-Off" at the end of school this summer. We adults might have had more fun than the kids!

I would encourage someone else to take the leap and volunteer because… there's no way to describe the "warm fuzzies" you get when a room full of little faces light up when you walk in the door -- or when you help a 4th grader FINALLY figure out that tricky long-division problem. Taking the time to get to know the kids and understanding what the Learning Center is about has been one of the most rewarding experiences for me.

A Year In Review

In July, we compiled a list of our accomplishments for our fiscal year (July 2006-June 2007) and we wanted to share those with you, our supporters.

10 Homework Club students increased their reading ability by at least one grade level. Of those, 3 students increased by two grade levels and 2 increased three grade levels.
All students enrolled in HW Club completed at least 4 hands-on science projects
31 students enrolled in our summer program entitled, “Explore The World”
Students created a “Recycling Station” in the center after studying about the environment and what they can do to help the Earth
The center added a third adult English class this year, sponsored by Metro Refugee English Program. Those three classes can serve a total of 45 students at a given time.
53 adult English students have participated in English classes this year
Two of the English classes visited the library and signed up for library cards
We were able to extend our Lottery for Education Afterschool Programs (LEAP) grant to continue funding our afterschool program and two staff positions
We were awarded $5000 from the Community Foundation to support staff salaries and allow us to keep our entire staff on through the summer
An article in the Tennessean about our 10^th anniversary garnered us approximately $2000 in cash donations and approximately $100 worth of items on our Amazon.com wishlist
110 volunteers served a total of 902 hours in the 2006 calendar year
7 volunteers committed to work one-on-one with a child in reading
186 individuals participated in our Night Out Against Crime block party on August 1, 2006
50 children and youth enrolled in HW Club received free brand-name shoes through the “Cold Feet, Warm Shoes” program, sponsored by Genesco and David Thornton of the Tennessee Titans
All computers at the Learning Center were upgraded in memory and operating systems (to Windows XP)

HCA Volunteer Work Day

On Wednesday, September 19th, twenty volunteers from HCA Healthcare came to the center to help us get some work done!

Our hard working crew at the end of a long day!

They worked super hard to install a water fountain, ripping out drywall and running pipes! The kids were so excited to see it when they came in that afternoon!

We also had our community room painted, in addition to two of our elementary classrooms!

Thanks HCA volunteers for a job well done!!

My job at the center is… Teacher’s Assistant

Hometown…I was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee

College Attended/Attending & Major…I am currently attending Tennessee State University where I am majoring in Biology with a teaching certification for grades 7-12.

Favorite Song…My favorite song is “No Weapon”, I don't remember who it is by, but it is an old gospel song.

If I were irresponsible and could max out a credit card at any store, it would be…Target. What, corny? I know but they have really nice things there to wear (for mommies and daughters) and you can get all of your household supplies.

My favorite thing about working at the center is…I am surrounded by beautiful kids from a totally different country. That keeps me on my toes everyday, but they come with the same wit and tricks as our beautiful American kids. Don’t be surprised when one of them charms you out of whatever they need from you. Oh! Let’s not forget my major is in education so I get experience working here.

My least favorite thing about working at the center is… that my job begins in the middle of the day. Nobody likes coming into work in the middle of the day. Good thing my “most favorite” outweighs my “least favorite”.

My favorite anecdote from my time here is…I guess my favorite anecdote would be a time when one of our students was having a really bad day. Actually this child was having a bad week. Instead of sending this student home everyday I sat with her and started talking and asking if anything was wrong. Of course at first she said “no” with lots of attitude. So I kept talking, but about random things just to lighten up the situation. Finally this particular student opened up, I gave my full attention, ears, and shoulder for this child during this emotional time. Shortly after this she would linger around me, I assumed because she felt comfortable to be around me. I felt I had the chance to put a little mind and heart at ease for the time being. Nothing made me feel more happy and special than that moment with that student.

We Recycle!

In April, our youth took a look at the center and made recommendations about how the center could be more Earth-friendly. One of those suggestions was to recycle. So in July, we set up a recycle station in the center! We are currently recycling mixed paper, aluminum, plastics, paperboard, and cardboard. Each week we load up a vehicle with what we have collected and take it to the local convenience center. Not only are our students learning about saving their planet, they are learning about being a good citizen, types of materials, and reducing waste.

We are often asked what the center's needs are, so we have created and frequently update a "wishlist" on Amazon.com. We originally created the list to build a library of books that were considered "required reading" for Metro Public Schools. This way a child could read ahead if they wanted to, or if they forgot their book at school, they could use one of ours at the center. Other items on our list are things that are needed for the daily operation of the center.

Meet Jalisa

Jalisa is another one of our high school graduates this year! This weekend Jalisa left for Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. She plans on majoring in photography and minoring in entrepreneurship. We are super proud of her and her accomplishments!

Meet Maryan

Maryan has had a big year! In May, Maryan graduated from Stratford High School with honors and also became a United States citizen.

Born in Somalia, Maryan and her family escaped civil war and fled to a refugee camp until September 18, 1999 when they were able to move to the United States for a better life.

This fall, Maryan heads to Austin Peay State University to study nursing. We are very proud of her accomplishments and are thrilled we've been able to be part of her journey!

Volunteer Opportunitites-- Fall 2007

Here are the latest volunteer opportunities at the CWA-Cayce Learning Center! Please contact me if you are interested or have questions! We ask that our volunteers love children, exhibit patience, respect diversity, have a willingness to learn, and can commit to volunteering once a week.

Homework Helpers
We are looking for energetic and committed adults interested in helping children and youth (grades K-12) with homework. Volunteers are expected to commit to one day per week (Monday through Thursday) from either 3:15-4:30pm, 4:30-5:30pm, OR 3:15-5:30pm. You'll be assigned to an age group of your choice and will help them finish homework and work on any enrichment activities the teachers have provided. No experience necessary... just a love of children and an interest in giving back to the community!

Reading Group Facilitator
The CWA-Cayce Learning Center is also looking for volunteers interested in facilitating small reading groups once a week. Groups consist of no more than five students and lesson plans are provided by a reading specialist. Lessons will be provided one week in advance, but require little to no preparation. A short training/orientation is required, as is a background check and fingerprinting. We are in need of someone to assist our middle school group on Mondays and/or Wednesdays from 4:45-5:30pm.

Computer Lab Volunteer
The CWA-Cayce Learning Center is looking for committed individuals to work in our computer lab during our afterschool program. Volunteers will assist children in a brief assignment provided by the teachers and then will supervise, engage and interact with children as they enjoy free time on the computers. We ask that our volunteers commit to one day per week.

We are looking for computer lab volunteers during the following times:
Mondays from 3:30-4:15pm and/or 4:45-5:30pm (elementary grades)
Tuesdays from 3:30-4:15pm and/or 4:45-5:30pm (middle & high school students)
Wednesdays from 3:30-4:15pm and/or 4:45-5:30pm (elementary grades)
Thursdays from 3:30-4:15pm and/or 4:45-5:30pm (middle and high school students)
